Tony Davies, a farmer from Powys, has won an award for his innovative creation of a new form of charcoal. Davies’ Biochar is made from Molina grass, a type of grass that is more sustainable and reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional charcoal.

Biochar is produced by heating organic matter in the absence of oxygen. This process creates a charcoal-like substance that is rich in carbon. Biochar can be used to improve soil fertility, reduce water pollution, and store carbon dioxide.

Davies’ work has been recognized with the Farming Connect Farm Innovator Award. He has also created jobs in his local community by collecting grass and branches to process into Biochar.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, Biochar also has the potential to:

  • Increase crop yields
  • Improve drought tolerance
  • Suppress plant diseases

Davies’ innovation is a positive step towards a more sustainable future for agriculture. His work shows that it is possible to produce charcoal in a way that is both environmentally friendly and economically viable.
