Swiss direct air capture (DAC) leader Climeworks and the Japanese IT giant NTT DATA Group have entered into a landmark agreement to scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) as a strategic countermeasure to rising emissions from the digital economy. This partnership marks a significant integration of atmospheric carbon removal into the climate strategies of large-scale technology infrastructure providers. By securing long-term carbon removal capacity, NTT DATA aims to address residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through operational efficiency alone. The deal signals a shift in the technology sector, where the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and data center workloads is now being paired with purchased, high-integrity carbon removal to meet corporate net-zero targets.

The primary challenge addressed by this agreement is the rapid acceleration of electricity demand and associated greenhouse gas emissions linked to AI training and data center operations. As global digital infrastructure expands, IT providers face increasing pressure to decouple their growth from environmental impact. Despite ongoing investments in renewable energy and efficiency, many tech firms are finding that operational changes are insufficient to reach absolute zero emissions. The persistence of “residual” emissions in complex global supply chains and energy grids creates a gap that threatens the credibility of long-term sustainability commitments and corporate climate reporting.

To mitigate this challenge, NTT DATA is utilizing Climeworks’ specialized CDR technology to apply high-quality carbon credits against its remaining emissions footprint. Unlike traditional avoidance-based offsets, this solution focuses on the physical removal of CO2 from the atmosphere, providing a “high-integrity” alternative that aligns with the latest standards from the IPCC and the Science Based Targets initiative. This procurement strategy allows NTT DATA to continue its digital expansion while structurally addressing the atmospheric impact of its infrastructure. The partnership effectively creates a financial and operational bridge between the burgeoning AI economy and the emerging carbon removal market.

The anticipated outcomes of this collaboration include the stabilization of NTT DATA’s carbon footprint and the provision of critical early-stage capital to scale the CDR industry. By committing to long-term contracts, NTT DATA provides the market certainty required for Climeworks to expand its DAC capacity. Furthermore, this deal establishes a precedent for other global IT and cloud providers to integrate atmospheric removal into their decarbonization portfolios. As the AI sector continues to grow, such partnerships are expected to become a standard component of responsible corporate governance, ensuring that the next generation of digital infrastructure operates within the boundaries of international climate goals.
