Verde Resources Inc. has announced that the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its engineered biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More has completed third-party verification and is now published in the ASTM International EPD library. Developed in collaboration with WAP Sustainability (part of SLR), the EPD follows a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) initiated earlier this year. The verification applies to engineered biochar utilized in carbon-sequestering road construction materials in the United States, alongside planned international pilots in Singapore.
The primary challenge facing the deployment of biochar in infrastructure is the historical lack of standardized, independently verified life-cycle data. Without established Environmental Product Declarations, infrastructure owners, contractors, and municipal departments of transportation struggle to quantify Global Warming Potential (GWP) and embodied carbon in asphalt and concrete. This measurement uncertainty creates commercial friction and prevents corporate and public buyers from confidently integrating carbon-sequestering materials into large-scale civil engineering projects.
To address this barrier, Verde Resources engaged WAP Sustainability to calculate the material’s life-cycle carbon accounting, specifically measuring Global Warming Potential in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent. The resulting EPD incorporates the long-term biogenic carbon stored within the engineered biochar structure. This standardized environmental profile provides civil engineering stakeholders with verified, transparent data to evaluate the net life-cycle climate impact of biochar-modified road formulations.
The verification directly advances commercial operations under Verde’s 10-year Master Commercialization and Collaboration Agreement with Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions. Furthermore, it strengthens carbon removal certification pathways established with Isometric, facilitating the generation of high-integrity carbon credits. Internationally, the EPD supports Verde’s licensing collaboration with Highway International Private Limited in Singapore, where pilot programs are evaluating biochar integration into high-performance road and airfield pavements.
