Supercritical, a London-based carbon removal marketplace, has successfully concluded a new funding round to accelerate the expansion of its supply development program. This investment, led by Greencode Ventures with participation from existing backers such as Lightspeed Venture Partners and RTP Global, is intended to bridge the gap between early-stage Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) concepts and commercial-scale infrastructure. The organization specializes in sourcing high-quality credits from various durable removal technologies, including biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More, direct air capture, and enhanced rock weathering. This capital injection comes at a critical juncture as the United Kingdom prepares to integrate carbon removal credits into the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) by 2029.
The primary challenge addressed by this expansion is the widening disparity between escalating corporate demand for permanent carbon removals and the actual pipeline of viable, high-quality projects. Market analysis suggests that new project development is not keeping pace with the rigorous requirements of institutional buyers. Developers often struggle to navigate the complex transition from a promising idea to a bankable deal, which requires comprehensive engineering plans, life-cycle assessments, and audit-ready monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks. Without systematic support, many projects fail to satisfy the intensive due diligence processes demanded by major corporations seeking long-term offtake agreements.
To resolve these bottlenecks, Supercritical is utilizing the new funding to systemize its project development and commercialization efforts. The company provides a vetted pathway for developers by supporting them through engineering design and the implementation of strict scientific vetting protocols. Supercritical currently rejects 88 percent of the projects it assesses to ensure only the most durable and verifiable removals reach the market. By assisting projects in meeting international MRV standards, the marketplace helps developers secure the necessary finance to build the physical infrastructure required for permanent sequestration, thereby de-risking the procurement process for corporate portfolios.
The outcomes of Supercritical’s systematic approach are already evident in the facilitation of nearly two million tonnes of carbon removal to date. A notable recent achievement includes a 10-year, one-million-tonne offtake agreement between the American biochar producer Liferaft and Microsoft. Supercritical played a pivotal role in this transaction by supporting Liferaft during the early stages of project design to ensure the operation met Microsoft’s stringent standards for measurement and verification. This funding round positions the company to bring a higher volume of such high-quality credits online, facilitating the climate infrastructure necessary for global net-zero goals.
