Salo, et al (2024) Nordic perspectives on the emerging biochar business. Journal of Cleaner Production. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2024.143660

The Nordic biochar market, although still in its early stages, holds significant promise for climate change mitigation, waste management, and circular economy initiatives. Produced through pyrolysis, biochar provides a versatile solution for carbon sequestration, soil remediation, and renewable energy production. A 2021 survey of 64 Nordic organizations revealed that biochar production is often treated as a side business, with market growth hampered by several key barriers.

Challenges include insufficient policy support, public awareness, and established norms, coupled with concerns over profitability and technological efficiency. Despite these hurdles, the environmental benefits and potential for biochar are clear. Key applications range from carbon removal and water filtration to soil remediation and landscaping. Furthermore, biochar co-products like bio-oil and energy-dense gases could enhance economic viability.

For the industry to reach its potential, the study stresses the need for better legal frameworks, increased collaboration among stakeholders, and the integration of biochar into broader climate policies. Standardizing biochar production and applications, as well as conducting focused research on its environmental, economic, and social impacts, is critical for fostering market growth.

With the right support, the Nordic biochar sector could play a pivotal role in addressing climate change, offering innovative solutions for sustainable development across multiple industries.
