Nandini, et al (2024) Effect of Mulberry Stalk Biochar on Soil Nutrients Status and Productivity of Mulberry (Morus alba L.). Asian Journal of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition.

Mulberry cultivation, critical for sericulture, thrives in varied climates, primarily in India. Enhancing soil fertility is essential for sustaining mulberry leaf production, impacting silkworm growth and silk quality. Recent research explores the benefits of biochar, a carbon-rich soil amendment, on soil health and crop yield.

Conducted in Karnataka, India, a field experiment evaluated the impact of mulberry stalk biochar on soil nutrient status and mulberry leaf yield. The study, spanning 2020-2021, utilized a randomized block design with eight treatments, including control and various combinations of biochar and farmyard manure (FYM).

Key Findings

  1. Leaf Yield: The combination of biochar and FYM significantly enhanced leaf yield. The highest yield (13.07 t/ha) was recorded with 10 t/ha biochar and 10 t/ha FYM, a 21% increase over the control.
  2. Soil Nutrient Status: Post-harvest analysis revealed substantial improvements in soil primary, secondary, and micronutrients with biochar application. Treatments combining 10 t/ha biochar and 10 t/ha FYM showed the highest nutrient levels.
  3. Sustainable Benefits: Biochar not only increased nutrient availability but also improved soil structure, moisture retention, and pH balance, contributing to long-term soil fertility and sustainability.

The study underscores the potential of mulberry stalk biochar as an effective soil amendment. Its application, especially when combined with FYM, enhances soil nutrient status and mulberry leaf yield, promoting sustainable agriculture. Adopting biochar can reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, fostering organic farming practices and supporting a circular economy.

Integrating biochar into mulberry cultivation could revolutionize soil management and crop productivity, offering a sustainable pathway for sericulture farmers. Future research should focus on optimizing biochar production and application techniques to maximize its agricultural benefits.
