The Philippine Carabao Center at Central Luzon State University (PCC-CLSU) and Alcom Carbon Markets Philippines Inc. have partnered to promote biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More for sustainable agriculture in Nueva Ecija and other areas. Their collaboration focuses on integrating biochar into farming systems as a biofertilizer and feed additive to improve soil health, livestock nutrition, and overall agricultural productivity.
A recent convergence meeting brought together PCC-CLSU officials and Alcom representatives to discuss biochar’s role in enhancing dairy buffalo farming. Biochar, when used as a soil amendmentA soil amendment is any material added to the soil to enhance its physical or chemical properties, improving its suitability for plant growth. Biochar is considered a soil amendment as it can improve soil structure, water retention, nutrient availability, and microbial activity. More, can improve water retention and nutrient availability, leading to better forage production for buffaloes. As a feed additive, it has shown potential to enhance digestion, improve milk yield, and support overall animal health.
Alcom, a carbon project developer, aims to advance sustainable farming through carbon sequestration initiatives. By integrating biochar into agricultural practices, the partnership seeks to improve farm productivity while contributing to climate resilience and waste management.
On February 6, 2025, PCC-CLSU and Alcom formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding. This partnership will drive research on biochar applications, particularly its combination with carabao dung to enhance soil fertility. The initiative aligns with both organizations’ goals of supporting sustainable livestock management, improving smallholder farmer livelihoods, and promoting climate-smart agriculture in the Philippines.
