Key Takeaways

  • Different biochar formulations heavily dictate soil chemical improvements and early tree growth responses.
  • High-carbon biochar significantly enhances soil chemical properties but does not boost tree height when applied alone.
  • Mineral-enriched biochar formulations successfully increase twelve-month tree height even without conventional mineral fertilizer.
  • Pairing biochar amendments with standard mineral fertilization yields the most substantial early growth improvements.
  • Utilizing forest biomass residues for tailored biochar production supports sustainable circular bioeconomy practices.

Managing forest plantations on strongly acidic, nutrient-poor soils presents significant agronomic hurdles due to low baseline fertility and limited chemical buffering capacity. While traditional mineral fertilizers stimulate rapid growth, they do not resolve underlying soil structural limitations or carbon deficits. Converting local forest biomass residues into tailored biochar products offers an innovative circular strategy to improve soil pH, enhance nutrient retention, and capture carbon within fragile ecosystems. However, because biochar materials vary considerably depending on their chemical composition and nutrient enrichment, understanding how specific formulations interact with commercial fertilizers is essential for optimizing forest management.

Field trials established in central Portugal evaluated the performance of both a high-carbon biochar and a mineral-enriched biochar applied locally within planting holes under flat and terraced conditions. Results demonstrated that applying the mineral-enriched biochar alone increased twelve-month plant height by 75 percent, whereas applying the high-carbon biochar alone produced no significant height response despite improving general soil chemistry. The most dramatic gains occurred when biochar was combined with standard mineral fertilization, driving height increases of up to 175 percent relative to unfertilized controls. These findings highlight that biochar functions most effectively as a complementary soil conditioner that works alongside nutrient supplies rather than acting as a standalone fertilizer replacement.
