Yanmar R&D Europe recently participated in the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) event in Italy’s Chianti region from October 16-18. The event highlighted innovative biochar technologies used in vineyards and olive groves. Yanmar introduced its Farm Circular Solution (FCS), a containerized system that converts farm waste into energy and valuable by-products like biochar and wood vinegar.

The FCS addresses environmental challenges by transforming woody agricultural waste into pellets, which are fed into a gasification unit. This unit generates 20 kW of electricity and 35 kW of heat, offering farms a sustainable energy source. By-products include biochar, which improves soil fertility and sequesters carbon, and wood vinegar, used as a natural pesticide and plant growth stimulant.

The system has proven beneficial for local farmers, such as a consortium in Florence that reduced reliance on chemical fertilizers and energy costs. Yanmar’s solution also aligns with the company’s Green Challenge 2050 initiative, which aims to create environmentally friendly and greenhouse gas-free farming operations.

Yanmar plans to expand the Farm Circular Solution across Italy and Europe, and is exploring its potential for urban waste management, with early tests underway to assess new feedstock options like pine straw. The Farm Circular Solution offers a promising step toward sustainable farming and waste-to-energy systems.
