The US BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More Initiative (USBI) is pleased to welcome Myles Gray, P.E., as its new Executive Director. Gray, who first joined the biochar movement in 2010, brings a unique blend of industry experience and optimism to the role. Initially drawn to the potential of biochar for carbon storage and waste management, he left the industry due to slow progress but re-engaged in 2021, contributing significantly to biochar use in stormwater management.
Gray succeeds Tom Miles, who has been instrumental in USBI’s growth since 2016. Miles’ leadership and dedication have established USBI as a key player in promoting biochar technologies. Gray acknowledges Miles’ immense contribution and aims to build on his legacy by driving market development for biochar across various sectors, from agriculture to environmental applications.
Under Gray’s leadership, USBI will focus on growing demand for physical biochar as a soil amendmentA soil amendment is any material added to the soil to enhance its physical or chemical properties, improving its suitability for plant growth. Biochar is considered a soil amendment as it can improve soil structure, water retention, nutrient availability, and microbial activity. More, concrete additive, and in horticulture and landscaping. USBI will also work on establishing an American National Standard (ANSI) for biochar, fostering trust and confidence in its use.
As USBI embarks on this new chapter, Gray remains committed to building a stronger industry, with upcoming initiatives like the North American Biochar Conference in 2025, positioning USBI as a central force in biochar’s role in addressing climate change and sustainable development.
