Offset8 Capital Limited, in partnership with Sawa, is launching a project in Indonesia focused on converting agricultural waste into biochar. This initiative aims to address local waste management issues while contributing to global climate mitigation efforts, starting in the Majalengka Regency in West Java.

The project seeks to efficiently manage agricultural waste, traditionally left to decay or burned, leading to environmental and health hazards. By converting this waste into biochar, the project provides an environmentally friendly solution and a sustainable method of carbon capture, estimating around US$50 million in carbon credits over the next decade.

Ensuring compliance with Indonesian law and international carbon standards, the project aligns with the Core Carbon Principles, emphasizing Indonesia’s commitment to global climate efforts. The recent launch of the Indonesia Carbon Exchange further demonstrates the country’s dedication to decarbonizing businesses and achieving net-zero goals.

Local communities are integral to this initiative, benefiting from a profit-sharing arrangement linked to the sale of carbon credits and project activities. Additionally, the focus on converting agricultural waste into biochar contributes to food security by producing a valuable soil amendment.

Phil Rickard, CEO and Founder of Sawa, highlights the project’s commitment to leveraging carbon capture technology to address global challenges. The engagement of companies from the Middle East and East Asia underscores the project’s international significance. Success in this pragmatic endeavor could position Indonesia as a player in the global carbon market, showcasing the practical impact of partnership and innovation in addressing climate change.
