German carbon credit procurement platform Senken and project developer Carbonsate have signed a landmark multi-year offtake agreement covering 50,000 tonnes of permanent carbon removal. The agreement directly addresses the critical shortage of verified permanent carbon removal capacity, which currently constrains corporate net-zero strategies. With cumulative global deliveries of durable carbon removal hovering around 1.5 million tonnes, this single commitment represents approximately four percent of all permanent volume delivered to date. Furthermore, corporate sustainability buyers face tight supply timelines under evolving frameworks like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and updated Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards, making multi-year forward commitments necessary to hedge against future supply deficits.
Carbonsate addresses these supply constraints by leveraging biomass geological storage (biomass burial) near Otjiwarongo, Namibia. The project selectively harvests invasive encroacher bush, a thick woody vegetation that degrades local grasslands, reduces biodiversity, and depletes groundwater recharge. Instead of allowing this harvested biomass to burn or rot, Carbonsate seals the waste wood in engineered underground storage chambers. These anaerobic conditions prevent combustion and decomposition, effectively locking the biogenic carbon away for centuries without requiring energy-intensive air capture technology.
The partnership provides Carbonsate with the commercial certainty needed to expand its Namibian storage operations, which have a potential capacity exceeding 100,000 tonnes annually within the coming years. Verified under the Puro.earth standard, the credits passed Senken’s proprietary Sustainability Integrity Index, which evaluates projects across more than 600 data points. Consequently, Senken’s enterprise client base—which includes major European corporations—gains long-term access to cost-effective, high-integrity durable removals, while the local ecosystem benefits from bush-thinning restoration efforts.
