BluSky Carbon Inc. has initiated biochar production at its new Warren, Arkansas facility, marking a significant step in the company’s $105 million, ten-year supply agreement announced in September 2024. This production facility, named AR1, includes a 50,000-square-foot enclosure on an 8.54-acre site and features the first of three Vulcan Heavy pyrolysis units. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to produce 40,000 tons of biochar annually.

Situated near a sustainable timber industry, AR1 has access to abundant softwood biomass, primarily yellow pine, minimizing transportation costs for feedstock. This biochar production also generates byproducts like bio-oil and syngas, which could help lower operational costs by powering some of the facility’s energy needs. The property also has capacity for potential production expansion without the need for additional space.

CEO Will Hessert emphasizes the scalability of the site and BluSky’s commitment to the Warren community, noting the skilled labor pool available locally. He highlights BluSky’s vision to leverage AR1 not only to fulfill its current contract but as a research hub for carbon removal innovations like Medusa Carbon mineralization and Kronos Direct Air Capture technology. BluSky sees the AR1 project as a foundational step toward industrial-scale carbon removal efforts.
