On April 14, a fire broke out at Metzler Forest Products in Reedsville, Pennsylvania, originating from a kiln used for drying firewood. However, key structures, including Metzler’s biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More production facility, remained intact. The company had installed a dedicated fire hydrant years prior as part of its emergency planning. This foresight, combined with the coordinated efforts of local emergency responders, played a critical role in minimizing the impact.
Metzler Forest Products expects minimal disruption to its operations. Temporary kiln solutions are in place, and firewood production is expected to return to full capacity by summer. Existing inventory should cover customer needs through the fall and winter seasons.
Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Metzler emphasized that the nature of working with wood and heat inherently carries risk. This event underscores the necessity of proactive safety planning, investment in critical infrastructure like fire hydrants, and strong collaboration with emergency services. The preservation of the biochar facility in particular reflects the effectiveness of these measures. Metzler’s experience serves as a practical reminder for businesses working with combustible materials to prioritize readiness and resilience.
