The Beyond Beans Foundation has issued a request for proposals (RfP) to assess the carbon insetting potential of biochar in West Africa’s cocoa agroforestry systems. In partnership with BioYam and supported by IDH, the study seeks to evaluate biochar’s role in improving soil health while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the cocoa value chain.

The initiative will analyze three biochar value chains involving different biomass sources (e.g., cocoa pod husks, pruning waste) and production methods (e.g., Kon-Tiki kilns, soil pits). The goal is to estimate GHG emission factors in alignment with established frameworks such as the GHG Protocol, SBTi FLAG, and Quantis cocoa guidance.

A key component of the study is to assess monetisation pathways, particularly carbon insetting, which integrates carbon sequestration directly within the cocoa supply chain. The study will also explore voluntary carbon credit options as a secondary consideration, focusing on data requirements, MRV processes, transaction costs, and potential market interest.

The results will guide the Beyond Beans Foundation in building scalable strategies for sustainable cocoa production and farmer engagement in carbon markets. The consultancy budget is capped at EUR 45,000, with proposals due by May 30, 2025, and work scheduled to begin in mid-June.

Interested consultants and organisations are encouraged to review the full RFP for detailed scope, objectives, and submission requirements.
