Wyoming-based Cowboy Clean Fuels has successfully sold its first durable carbon removal credits through a procurement transaction backed by Salesforce and arranged by Milkywire. Operating in the United States, the company entered the durable carbon removal market by providing 500 tonnes of permanent carbon removal as part of a broader 3,661-tonne purchasing round designed to support early-stage climate technology suppliers.

A primary challenge in the nascent carbon removal sector is the scarcity of operating projects capable of providing verifiable, permanent storage alongside commercial viability. Many emerging pathways face difficulties in proving long-term carbon accounting, managing lifecycle emissions, and scaling operations without prohibitive capital expenditure or reliance on unproven infrastructure.

To resolve these hurdles, Cowboy Clean Fuels utilizes a biomass carbon removal and storage method combined with renewable natural gas production. The enterprise takes agricultural processing residues and injects them into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs in the Powder River Basin. Underground microorganisms break down the biomass anaerobically, capturing methane for commercial use while permanently binding carbon dioxide to subterranean coal formations.

As a result of these actions, the company’s operating Triangle Unit facility successfully delivered independently verified credits for 2026 delivery, aligning with international standards such as ISO 14064-2:2019. This transaction provides early revenue for a commercial-scale project while helping corporate buyers advance their long-term sustainability commitments through verified, permanent carbon removal solutions.
