Swiss direct air capture (DAC) pioneer Climeworks has initiated technological upgrades across its operational infrastructure in Iceland following real-world operational performance that fell below nameplate capture metrics. Operating commercial-scale facilities—including the Orca plant commissioned in 2021 and the larger Mammoth facility launched in 2024—the company experienced sub-capacity capture efficiency resulting from harsh environmental exposure, sub-optimal solid sorbent longevity, and operational learn-curve bottlenecks inherent to early-stage atmospheric carbon capture deployment.

The principal obstacle confronting Climeworks involves resolving the operational gap between theoretical nameplate capacity and actual net atmospheric carbon removal in cold, sub-polar climates. Climeworks’ commercial DAC systems rely on fan-driven collector units utilizing solid sorbent materials that selectively bind carbon dioxide before desorbing it at high temperatures. Operating in Iceland’s ambient conditions exposed collector modules to extreme weather, variable humidity, and severe thermal cycles, which accelerated sorbent degradation, reduced energy efficiency, and restricted annual operational uptime, ultimately preventing the facilities from achieving maximum continuous capture yields.

To address these performance deficiencies, Climeworks deployed next-generation DAC hardware and optimized chemical sorbent matrix materials across its collector arrays. System modifications focus on enhancing fluid dynamic airflow through the capture modules, improving heat recovery integration during desorption cycles, and implementing upgraded sorbent formulations engineered for greater chemical stability and moisture tolerance. Additionally, the operational upgrades incorporate predictive maintenance and automation frameworks designed to preserve filter integrity and optimize energy consumption per metric ton of captured carbon dioxide.

These technical interventions underscore the iterative refinement necessary to scale direct air capture technology from pilot-scale demonstrations to commercial-grade industrial infrastructure. By retrofitting collector arrays and upgrading sorbent materials, Climeworks aims to stabilize capture reliability, improve energy efficiency per ton of carbon captured, and validate permanent underground sequestration in partnership with Carbfix. Establishing robust, weather-resistant DAC architecture remains critical for meeting long-term corporate carbon removal commitments and lowering levelized removal costs toward broader market viability.
