Equation Coffee, a green coffee seller based in Colombia, recently launched BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More Origins, a new line of coffees produced through a collaborative regenerative agriculture initiative. This project represents a significant effort involving multiple farmers, soil scientists, and forward-thinking coffee companies, focusing on using a material derived from coffee plant prunings as a soil amendmentA soil amendment is any material added to the soil to enhance its physical or chemical properties, improving its suitability for plant growth. Biochar is considered a soil amendment as it can improve soil structure, water retention, nutrient availability, and microbial activity. More.
While not yet widespread in the coffee industry, applying this coffee biomass-derived material as a soil amendment has demonstrated promising results in enhancing soil quality and sequestering carbon. Early research even suggests potential improvements in coffee quality.
The Equation-supported project has yielded encouraging preliminary results. Participating farms have observed a 30% increase in soil organic carbon. Farmers have also experienced a 25% increase in income through carbon credits and reduced input costs, supplemented by additional earnings from increased food production.
This multi-stakeholder Coffee Biochar project receives support from Equation’s Soil Revolution Fund, which champions regenerative initiatives focused on soil health and carbon sequestration, and El Green Hub, a network of Colombian agricultural and coffee groups dedicated to environmental stewardship. An agri-tech firm is co-coordinating the project.
The program is farmer-led, aiming to build a future where coffee cultivation aligns with environmental health and farmer prosperity. Equation’s objective is to expand this initiative to include 5,000 farming families by 2026.
