The elimination of child labor in Ghana’s cocoa industry is inextricably linked to the economic stability and climate resilience of its farming families. Recognizing this, the Climate Cocoa Project, a joint initiative by the Government of Japan and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), is deploying a powerful, yet simple, climate-smart tool: biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More. This approach is proving that environmental stewardship can be a direct pathway to social justice.
Biochar offers a dual advantage: it enhances soil health, improving the farm’s resilience to climate change, while providing a cost-effective, high-quality input. By utilizing a byproduct, the project minimizes the reliance on expensive external fertilizers, directly reducing farming costs for the families involved.
The key to fighting child labor, however, lies in the economic outcome of this technology. Over 300 cocoa-farming families have been trained in biochar production, and the subsequent application of the fertilizer has led to tangible increases in cocoa yields and farmer income. This critical rise in profitability provides the financial security necessary to break the cycle of poverty that often compels children to work. As local farmers have confirmed, better yields mean they “can afford to hire adult labour instead of depending on children to work on our farms.”
The use of biochar thus enables the creation of sustainable, child labor-free zones from the ground up. This agricultural success is paired with efforts to support community child protection systems, including equipping local police and welfare services and facilitating the return of over 100 children to school. The Climate Cocoa Project exemplifies a model where sustainable farming practices and improved livelihoods are the fundamental mechanisms for ensuring that every child in a cocoa community has the chance to thrive.
