The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced a AU $ 4.8 million grant to BioCarbon Pty Ltd to support the construction and operation of a commercial-scale biocarbon production facility in New South Wales, Australia .This funding is part of a larger AU 13.1 million project aimed at accelerating the decarbonization of the heavy industrial sector. While the sector is under increasing pressure to decarbonize, finding a high-quality, renewable substitute that can perform consistently in electric arc furnaces (EAF) has proven difficult. Furthermore, the “green premium”—the higher cost associated with sustainable materials—often deters widespread industrial adoption. For biocarbon to be a viable solution, it must be produced at a scale and price point that can compete with traditional fossil carbon while meeting the rigorous technical specifications of steelmakers.
