The Washington State Department of Commerce recently announced $16.8 million in clean energy grants to support 22 projects across 17 tribal communities in Washington, United States. These awards, funded through the state’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA), are designed to bolster tribal energy sovereignty and long-term community resilience. The projected outcomes of this feasibility study include the creation of a roadmap for a pilot production facility that could transform forest residues into high-value biochar. Success in this planning phase would lay the groundwork for reduced climate pollution, local job creation, and enhanced economic opportunity through the sale of biochar or carbon credits. By identifying the specific technical and financial needs early, the Nisqually Indian Tribe is positioning itself to strengthen community facilities and lower long-term energy burdens.
