British telecommunications provider VodafoneThree has partnered with environmental market procurement platform Abatable to launch a structured carbon removal request for proposals (RFP). The initiative aims to source 24,000 tonnes of high-integrity carbon dioxide removals between 2027 and 2030, directly supporting the company’s targets to achieve net-zero for its United Kingdom operations by 2027 and full value-chain net-zero by 2040. Under the four-year framework, Abatable’s platform will manage the intake, screening, and evaluation of supplier submissions, while offering developers with extended project pipelines the option to register additional volumes for the 2031 to 2033 period.
Corporate buyers navigating the voluntary carbon market frequently face challenges regarding project integrity, delivery risk, and varying durability standards across carbon removal methodologies. For developers of durable carbon removal solutions, securing long-term institutional off-take commitments remains a major barrier to scaling operations and funding capital-intensive deployment. Furthermore, evaluating diverse project archetypes within a single corporate strategy requires rigorous due diligence and standardized monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) protocols.
To address these market complexities, VodafoneThree and Abatable established a dual-track RFP structure designed to evaluate both engineered and nature-based removal projects located within the United Kingdom. Track one focuses on hybrid and technological solutions—specifically highlighting biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), direct air capture with storage (DACS), and soil carbon methodologies—assessed on delivery schedules, durability, and integrity. Track two targets local woodland creation accredited under the UK government’s Woodland Carbon Code. The framework also invites project developers to integrate Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and connectivity services from VodafoneThree to enhance real-time MRV capabilities across project sites.
The procurement strategy establishes a structured, transparent mechanism for UK carbon removal developers to secure commercial commitments through 2030, with final project selections scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. By incorporating biochar and other durable technological removals alongside afforestation, VodafoneThree diversification reduces portfolio delivery risks while incentivizing domestic project development. Additionally, integrating cellular connectivity into project MRV infrastructure sets a precedent for telecom-enabled verification, reinforcing commercial scaling pathways for durable carbon removal across the United Kingdom.
