The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development program has provided a $570,625 Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant to West Bio-Hat Creek Bioenergy in Burney, California. Furthermore, rural bioenergy power plants require capital deployment to optimize thermal conversion efficiencies, expand generation capacity, and maintain commercial viability when processing challenging forest feedstocks.
West Bio-Hat Creek Bioenergy addressed these operational challenges by securing REAP capital to improve power generation technology and processing efficiency. The facility converts incoming forest residues directly into dispatchable bioenergy and high-value biochar. By processing hazardous forest fuels cleared from surrounding timberlands, the operation establishes a continuous, economic outlet for low-value biomass while monetizing both energy generation and carbonaceous solid co-products.
The grant deployment enables West Bio-Hat Creek Bioenergy to expand power production capabilities, boost regional biochar yields, and strengthen forest thinning efforts across Shasta County. The plant maintains 15 full-time technical jobs, primarily filled by local residents, and generated over 60 temporary construction positions. By feeding reliable electricity into the local electrical grid and outputting biochar, the facility reduces regional wildfire hazards while stimulating broader economic growth in Northern California.
