Technology giant Salesforce has entered into a five-year carbon credit offtake agreement with deep-tech developer Mitti Labs to purchase 500,000 satellite-verified methane reduction credits. The initiative supports climate-smart rice cultivation practices across small farms in India and Southeast Asia, integrating advanced remote sensing technology with agricultural emission reductions.
A key challenge addressed by the project is the high volume of greenhouse gas emissions generated by traditional flooded rice cultivation. Oxygen-starved soils in conventional paddy fields foster microbial activity that produces substantial methane emissions, while inefficient water management practices lead to high consumption rates without systematic measurement or verification.
The solution deployed by Mitti Labs involves the independent auditing of project performance and field dry-downs using its proprietary GeoAI platform. This monitoring infrastructure combines ground-truth data with high-resolution radar satellite observation developed with NASA support, enabling the implementation of techniques that cut methane emissions by up to 50 percent and water usage by up to 40 percent.
The expected outcome is a scalable framework for agricultural decarbonization that preserves crop yields while generating high-integrity carbon credits for corporate buyers. Through this multi-year commitment, Mitti Labs is expanding its project pipeline across India and Southeast Asia with the target of achieving an annual issuance of two million satellite-verified methane credits by 2028.
