Milkywire and Salesforce have finalized pre-purchase agreements for more than 12,500 tonnes of durable carbon removal credits, involving 19 suppliers across 15 countries. This investment portfolio, underwritten in part by Salesforce as part of its First Movers Coalition pledge, encompasses six distinct removal pathways. Among the primary beneficiaries are biochar-focused organizations, including PyroCCS, which secured one of the largest allocations in this funding round. This initiative represents a continued collaboration between the two entities to provide early-stage capital to the emerging carbon dioxide removal (CDR) sector.
The primary challenge addressed by this investment is the current stagnation in sector funding and the shortening financial runways for commercial-scale deployment. Many carbon removal technologies remain in early stages and struggle to attract large-scale buyers who typically prioritize high-volume, immediate delivery. Without catalytic capital, these promising technologies face a “valley of death” where they cannot achieve the operational scale necessary to integrate fully into voluntary carbon markets or meet future corporate net-zero requirements.
To mitigate these financial barriers, Milkywire and Salesforce utilized a pre-purchase model to funnel capital directly to immature but high-potential technologies. The solution focuses on diverse, durable pathways that offer high permanence, such as community-led biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More production tied to ecosystem restoration. Specifically, the agreement supports projects like those managed by PyroCCS, which integrate local waste streams and emphasize community participation in emerging markets. This structured procurement provides the predictable revenue streams necessary for developers to expand infrastructure and refine technical processes.
The outcomes of this agreement include the immediate securing of approximately 1,350 tonnes of biochar-based removals from PyroCCS, supporting their goal to scale operations in Namibia to over 400 plants by 2030. Furthermore, the partnership has signaled a long-term commitment to the industry, with plans for additional catalytic purchases to be announced in 2026. By prioritizing suppliers that pair scale with durability, Salesforce and Milkywire are establishing a benchmark for high-permanence removals, encouraging a market shift from traditional offsets toward verified, long-term carbon sequestration.
