Skagit Soils Inc., a composting facility in Mount Vernon, Washington, part of the Lautenbach Recycling family, now offers biochar-enhanced compost. This new product, developed with Kulshan Carbon Trust (KCT), aims to improve soil health, enhance water retention, and boost soil fertility. BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More, produced through the pyrolysisPyrolysis is a thermochemical process that converts waste biomass into bio-char, bio-oil, and pyro-gas. It offers significant advantages in waste valorization, turning low-value materials into economically valuable resources. Its versatility allows for tailored products based on operational conditions, presenting itself as a cost-effective and efficient More process of organic materials like wood and green waste, is the key ingredient in this innovative compost.
Skagit Soils, a key player in the local agricultural community, is excited about this partnership. CEO Craig Culmback highlights the dual benefits of healthier plant growth and long-term soil health, alongside carbon sequestration. This collaboration underscores their commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.
KCT is providing this biochar-enhanced compost to regional growers for field trials to document its benefits across various agricultural settings. Operating from northwest Washington, KCT works with tribal groups and communities to implement natural climate solutions, leveraging local knowledge and technical assistance.
The initiative seeks to support sustainable farming practices and enhance crop productivity. With support from the Russell Family Foundation, KCT is engaging with growers like Viva Farms and Puget Sound Food Hub Cooperative to demonstrate biochar’s potential to rejuvenate agricultural operations and build community climate resilience.
Skagit Soils’ biochar-enhanced compost is now available for both consumers and farmers, suitable for home gardens or agricultural fields.
