Skagit Soils Inc., a composting facility in Mount Vernon, Washington, has introduced biochar-enhanced compost. This innovation is a result of a collaboration with the Kulshan Carbon Trust (KCT), based in Bellingham, Washington. Skagit Soils, part of the Lautenbach Recycling family, aims to improve sustainable agriculture and gardening in the region with this new offering.

Biochar, produced through the pyrolysis of organic materials such as scrap wood, manure, leaves, and other green waste, enhances the compost’s properties. Skagit Soils’ biochar-infused compost improves soil health, enhances water retention, and boosts soil fertility. Craig Culmback, CEO of Skagit Soils, notes that this product supports healthier plant growth and contributes to long-term soil health and carbon sequestration.

The Kulshan Carbon Trust is providing regional growers with Skagit Soils’ biochar-enhanced compost for field trials to document its benefits in various agricultural settings. KCT, working with tribal groups and local communities in northwest Washington, focuses on designing and implementing natural climate solutions.

The initiative aims to create a sustainable soil amendment that supports farming practices and enhances crop productivity. KCT acknowledges the support of the Russell Family Foundation and has engaged with local growers like Viva Farms and Puget Sound Food Hub Cooperative.

Skagit Soils’ biochar-enhanced compost is now available to both consumers and farmers for use in home gardens and agricultural fields, offering environmental and agricultural benefits.
