The UK’s Aston University’s Energy & Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) is inviting businesses in the West Midlands to collaborate on developing and commercializing low-carbon technologies. The initiative follows additional funding for the West Midlands Innovation Accelerator, recently announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
EBRI specializes in pyrolysisPyrolysis is a thermochemical process that converts waste biomass into bio-char, bio-oil, and pyro-gas. It offers significant advantages in waste valorization, turning low-value materials into economically valuable resources. Its versatility allows for tailored products based on operational conditions, presenting itself as a cost-effective and efficient More technology, which converts organic materials like sawdust, agricultural straw, and dried chicken litter into high-value bioproducts. Through its BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More CleanTech Accelerator, EBRI aims to drive innovation in low-carbon products, with the potential to secure export contracts worth over £200 million.
Tim Miller, EBRI’s Government and Enterprise Engagement Manager, highlighted the program’s success in creating everyday items from biochar, including collaborations with a Birmingham law firm. The team is now seeking partners to explore applications such as bio-based paints and coatings, low-carbon industrial heating solutions, and soil conditioners. Additional research is targeting biochar uses in water treatment, odor control, and improved health for plants, trees, and animals.
“Our focus is on taking cutting-edge research out of the lab and into commercial markets, both domestically and internationally,” said Miller.
This initiative aligns with the broader West Midlands Innovation Accelerator’s goals to advance sustainable technologies while fostering local economic growth. Interested companies are encouraged to contact EBRI to help bring new products and ideas to market.
