Aston University’s Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) is seeking partners for its government-backed BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More CleanTech Accelerator. This initiative, part of the West Midlands Innovation Accelerator, focuses on advancing regional engineering R&D and driving commercial growth.
The West Midlands Innovation Accelerator, initially introduced in the 2022 levelling-up white paper, recently received extended funding as announced in the November 2024 budget. Its aim is to develop innovative products and processes while boosting exports of low-carbon solutions.
EBRI’s Biochar CleanTech Accelerator utilizes pyrolysisPyrolysis is a thermochemical process that converts waste biomass into bio-char, bio-oil, and pyro-gas. It offers significant advantages in waste valorization, turning low-value materials into economically valuable resources. Its versatility allows for tailored products based on operational conditions, presenting itself as a cost-effective and efficient More technology to convert organic materials like sawdust, chicken litter, and agricultural straw into biochar, gas, and liquid bioproducts. The program targets significant export opportunities, aiming for contracts worth over £200 million.
Current collaborations include creating biochar-based office products, with future efforts targeting paints, coatings, low-carbon gas, soil conditioners, and water treatment products. Researchers are also exploring advanced filters and nanotechnology applications.
The Accelerator is dedicated to commercializing research at scale, both domestically and internationally. The additional government funding will support ongoing projects from 2025 to 2026.
Businesses interested in partnering with EBRI can contact the team at biochar@aston.ac.uk to explore innovative opportunities in low-carbon technologies.
