In a significant development for the Malaysian palm biomass sector, the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) is open to considering a new market mechanism to bolster the industry. According to Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin, this consideration stems from the need to further support the commercial processing of palm biomass into high-value products. While the industry is already active through effective business-to-business (B2B) models, the potential for government intervention and new policy frameworks remains on the table should the value chain require strengthening or if new market opportunities arise.

During a session in the Dewan Rakyat, Datuk Chan highlighted that the palm biomass industry has shown promising growth, driven by an increasing demand for its diverse applications. These include renewable energy generation, the production of organic fertilisers, bio-pellets, and critically, biochar. Several Malaysian firms have already achieved success in commercialising these products, generating economic returns not only for large mill owners but also for smallholders and local entrepreneurs.

The KPK’s role is centered on creating a facilitative and supportive ecosystem. This is achieved through policy coordination and initiatives such as the National Biomass Action Plan 2030 (PTBN2030). The Ministry’s readiness to reassess policy requirements reflects a proactive approach to ensuring the biomass industry remains a key contributor to Malaysia’s agro-commodity ecosystem and its broader green and low-carbon economic development objectives. This ongoing development and strategic foresight demonstrate a commitment to harnessing the full potential of palm biomass, positioning biochar and other sustainable products at the forefront of the country’s economic and environmental agenda.
