The American BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More Institute and the North American Biochar Conference have officially opened nominations for the 2026 North American Biochar Conference Awards in the United States. The annual awards program serves to honor individuals and organizations driving significant progress in research, leadership, mentorship, and commercial development across the biochar value chain. Nominees must reside or actively operate within North America, with winners scheduled to be formally announced during the flagship conference held in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The nomination cycle addresses the challenge of identifying, verifying, and standardizing industry excellence within a rapidly growing and fragmented market sector. As commercial biochar deployment expands, the industry faces an ongoing need for established benchmarks, verified leadership, and clear models of technical and operational success. Without structured recognition platforms, emerging research breakthroughs and high-impact commercial practices often lack the visibility required to accelerate regional adoption and scale.
To address these visibility and standardization challenges, the program established four distinct award categories evaluated against rigorous criteria. The Tom Miles Visionary Leadership Award recognizes foundational leadership that advances the wider industry. The Industry Champion Award targets measurable contributions to commercial adoption and growth. Research contributions in academia or industry are evaluated through the Research Excellence Award, while early-career talent is supported via The Larson Founders Award for Students, which includes full conference admission.
The nomination period, which runs through September 30, establishes a standardized mechanism for highlighting key technological, scientific, and leadership milestones across North America. By showcasing verified achievements at the industry’s major regional gathering, the program reinforces operational standards, strengthens professional networks, and incentivizes continued innovation in climate mitigation and soil health applications.
