In a landmark moment for sustainable science, the international academic journal Biochar X officially launched in July 2025, with an inaugural editorial by Wenfu Chen, Eilhann E. Kwon, Hailong Wang, Bing Wang, and Yanlin Qin. This new open-access publication is poised to become a central hub for researchers, policymakers, and engineers dedicated to exploring the vast potential of biochar. The journal’s mission is to expand the frontiers of knowledge by encouraging diverse developments, fostering global academic exchange, and facilitating the translation of scientific research into practical applications.

Biochar has a long history, but its modern-day applications are showcasing remarkable potential. While traditionally used to enhance agricultural soils, biochar’s unique physical, chemical, and biological properties have expanded its use into various sectors, including energy, healthcare, and construction. The material is now seen as a crucial tool for addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, such as the energy crisis, environmental degradation, food security, and climate change. However, the research and implementation of biochar are still in a dynamic phase, highlighting the urgent need for a platform that can foster collaboration among diverse experts.

Biochar X will investigate biochar’s potential benefits for humans, including its applications in detoxification and pharmaceuticals. It will also examine its use in animal feed, waste management, and animal health, as well as its impact on food safety and nutritional value. These efforts are aimed at providing new solutions for the health and well-being of both humans and animals.

In the construction and building industry, the journal will highlight innovative uses of biochar in building materials. Research will focus on its functions in regulating indoor humidity, temperature, and air quality, and even its ability to shield against electromagnetic radiation.
