Phuong (2024) Application of soil amendments: investigation of incubation time on some soil solution properties of Kien Giang, Vietnam. Journal of Applied Biology & Biotechnology. DOI: 10.7324/JABB.2024.188850

Improving soil quality is crucial for maintaining agricultural productivity, especially in rice-growing areas like Kien Giang, Vietnam, where soils are highly acidic. A recent study investigated the effects of lime and alkalized biochar on soil solution properties under submerged conditions. The research focused on parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), available phosphorus (P), and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+), measured over incubation periods of up to 60 days.

Key findings include:

  • Lime Alone: Lime increased soil pH and EC, with high phosphorus release sustained for 21 days. However, it did not enhance NH4+ availability.
  • Lime with Alkalized Biochar: The combination was more effective, improving pH and EC while maintaining high phosphorus and NH4+ levels for up to 35 days.

The study highlights the advantages of integrating lime with alkalized biochar over using lime alone. This combination enhances nutrient availability and soil fertility, benefiting rice cultivation in acidic soils. It also emphasizes the importance of monitoring incubation times to optimize soil amendment strategies.

These findings contribute to developing sustainable soil management practices, particularly in regions with challenging soil conditions like the Mekong Delta. Such approaches are essential for supporting crop productivity while addressing the rising costs and environmental concerns associated with conventional fertilizers.
