The Heartfulness Institute, in partnership with PayPal, has launched a BiocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More Centre of Excellence at Kanha Shanti Vanam, near Hyderabad, with the goal of fostering rural entrepreneurship and expanding biochar adoption at scale. Inaugurated by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on May 5, the initiative is designed to equip rural communities—especially women and youth—with the skills and infrastructure to establish biochar production units and integrate biochar into sustainable rural business models.
Targeting both capacity building and economic empowerment, the Centre offers practical training on biochar production, application, and its role in regenerative agriculture. It provides an immersive, end-to-end learning experience that demonstrates biochar’s impact on soil health, crop productivity, and afforestation. By coupling hands-on education with entrepreneurial guidance, the initiative seeks to close the gap between biochar knowledge and real-world rural deployment.
The program is part of a broader effort to integrate smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs into emerging green value chains. Biochar’s established benefits—improved soil fertility, increased water retention, enhanced nutrient availability, and long-term carbon sequestration—are at the core of this model. By helping farmers boost yields by 10–30% while reducing input costs, the initiative positions biochar not only as an ecological solution but also as a driver of rural prosperity.
In addition to agricultural benefits, biochar production generates carbon credits, which the Centre plans to use strategically to subsidize access for farmers. This creates a financially viable, circular model that incentivizes both adoption and environmental stewardship. The initiative also builds on successful land restoration work at Kanha Shanti Vanam, where biochar has played a key role in transforming degraded land into thriving green zones.
The Centre of Excellence supports India’s Skill India mission and aligns with national goals of agricultural sustainability and rural economic development. With a long-term vision of establishing biochar units in every village, the initiative represents a strategic step toward scaling climate-smart agriculture and enabling inclusive green entrepreneurship across the country.
