The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in partnership with Ghana’s Water Resources Commission, has implemented a sustainable agricultural initiative under the LOGMe II Sahelian Landscapes Project to train smallholder farmers across 14 communities in northern Ghana. Operating within the Upper East and Upper West Regions, the project assists local agricultural producers in transitioning toward sustainable land management by converting abundant crop residues and organic waste into biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. Smallholder agricultural producers in northern Ghana—particularly women farmers in districts such as Talensi—face severe financial pressures due to surging prices for synthetic fertilizers, which currently cost approximately GH₵ 500 per bag. Limited access to input subsidies and formal credit further restricts these producers, frequently forcing them to cultivate below full capacity or abandon arable land entirely. Beyond financial strains, the region struggles with low soil moisture retention and dry Sahelian environmental conditions. Furthermore, prolonged reliance on synthetic chemical inputs has degraded soil quality over time, jeopardizing both crop yields and food quality.
To address these economic and ecological pressures, the IUCN and the Water Resources Commission introduced technical training facilitated by soil research scientists and local extension officers. The program instructs farmers on converting agricultural waste—including maize cobs, rice husks, sorghum stalks, soybean residues, groundnut shells, and manure—into biochar. Implemented alongside community tree nurseries, the project provides structured instruction on optimal soil application methods to enhance nutrient availability and moisture retention. This localized strategy reduces open crop residue burning while establishing a sustainable soil management framework across arid landscapes.
The implementation of the LOGMe II Sahelian Landscapes Project has enabled participating farmers, especially women, to significantly reduce their dependence on commercial synthetic fertilizers. By leveraging abundant farm waste, local producers are cutting input costs while improving soil structure and sustaining crop yields. In addition to enhancing farm-level self-sufficiency, several participants have begun producing biochar for commercial distribution to neighboring agricultural workers, generating a new income stream. The project successfully advances land restoration and climate resilience across 14 beneficiary communities in northern Ghana.
