In a collaborative effort aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices across member states, the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), in partnership with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), hosted a workshop on Smart Agriculture and Biochar. The event was held on September 10, 2025, as a key component of Green Week 2025, an initiative by the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University (KazNARU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The workshop engaged a diverse group of 48 participants, including teaching staff, Master’s, and PhD students from KazNARU’s Water and IT Hub, providing them with valuable insights and practical knowledge. The program included presentations by Mr. Bakytzhan Arystanbek, a Project Manager at IOFS, who introduced new training manuals focused on Biochar Application and Smart Agriculture Technologies. These manuals were developed through the joint efforts of IOFS, ICESCO, and KazNARU, reflecting a coordinated strategy to provide tangible resources for agricultural development.

Experts from a range of institutions contributed to the discourse. The Astana IT University presented on the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in urban farming, while the Fergana Beekeepers Association from Uzbekistan shared how IoT is being utilized in apiculture. Additionally, a representative from the Tajik Agrarian University discussed the digitalization of the water sector, and Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University in Kazakhstan provided a detailed overview of biochar applications.

The workshop was complemented by a practical field visit on September 9, 2025, allowing participants to witness live demonstrations. Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University showcased the hands-on application of biochar, while Astana IT University demonstrated various smart agriculture technologies in a real-world setting. The event concluded with a ceremony to award certificates to all participants, marking the successful completion of the training. This initiative underscores the commitment of IOFS and ICESCO to support their member states with practical solutions and innovative training resources to bolster food security and sustainable agricultural systems.
