On January 23, 2024, Ecostrat Inc. and the BDO Zone Initiative, in collaboration with The Digest, hosted the BDO ZoneCONNECT webinar. The event highlighted two investment-ready BDO Zone communities in Alberta: Vegreville (rated ‘A’ for wheat straw) and the Lesser Slave Region (rated ‘BBB’ for woody biomass).

Moderated by The Digest editor Jim Lane, the webinar featured Aryn Garswood (BDO Zone Initiative), Bob Bezpalko (Northeast Alberta Information HUB), Geoff Tauvette (Canadian Council for Sustainable Aviation Fuels), and executives from First Indigenous Energy Services Inc. Discussions focused on the biomass potential of these regions, investment incentives, and infrastructure readiness.

Speakers emphasized that Vegreville’s agricultural sector produces over 455,000 bone-dry tonnes of surplus wheat straw annually, making it an attractive feedstock for bio-based industries. With rail access and industrial development sites available, the region offers a strong foundation for new projects.

In the Lesser Slave Region, an estimated 155,000 dry tonnes of wood fiber—sourced from forestry operations and sawmills—presents opportunities for biomass-based energy. First Indigenous Energy Services Inc. is spearheading a bio-energy facility using pyrolysis technology to generate electricity and biochar, marking the first Indigenous-led BDO Zone rating in North America.
