In a major move towards sustainable carbon removal, The Next 150 has inked a groundbreaking 5-year deal with Shell Environmental Products. This strategic partnership involves the supply of up to 22,500 carbon removal credits from The Next 150’s pioneering biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More production facility in Irapuato, Mexico. Launched just last May, the project focuses on refining AgriWaste from crops like corn, wheat, and sorghum.
Operated through General Biochar Systems (GBS), a subsidiary of The Next 150, the project is currently undergoing certification with Puro.Earth, a leader in CO2 removal certification. Pending approval and ongoing due diligence, Shell Environmental Products will be able to offtake the credits. The first batch is anticipated to be issued by Q3 2024.
This collaboration is pivotal for The Next 150’s mission to scale the biochar pathway of carbon removal across Latin America. Patrick Atanasije Pineda, Managing Partner at The Next 150, emphasized the importance of global companies’ support, such as Shell Environmental Products, in unlocking growth capital and project finance in the global south.
Looking ahead, The Next 150 plans to expand biochar production with two additional plants expected to be operational in 2024 and 2025. Shell Environmental Products, known for its dedication to carbon credit utilization in climate strategies, plays a crucial role in sourcing and trading these credits, contributing to a more sustainable and climate-friendly future.
