Pyrogen, a Kenyan startup specializing in biochar-derived carbon removal, has received a utility model patent from the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) for its biochar-infused concrete mix designs. The company is set to establish a pilot plant in Baringo County to produce biochar-infused concrete products. The facility is projected to manufacture 250,000 square meters of concrete annually, while sequestering over 3,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

This initiative will contribute to sustainable development in Kenya’s semi-arid region by creating local jobs and supporting community-driven biomass harvesting programs. Pyrogen plans to use biochar, produced from invasive biomass species, to reduce cement usage in its concrete. This not only sequesters carbon but also enhances the mechanical properties of the material, according to tests.

Founded in 2022, Pyrogen is positioning itself as a pioneer in eco-friendly construction materials. By sourcing raw materials from local suppliers and working with nearby communities, the company aims to boost local economies while advancing carbon capture goals.

As Africa faces growing infrastructure demands, Pyrogen sees this as a chance to integrate sustainable building solutions like biochar-infused concrete into future projects, aligning with regional efforts to lower emissions. The company’s plant is part of a broader effort to decarbonize Africa’s construction industry.
