Varaha, a leading Indian carbon removal company, has announced the issuance of India’s first-ever carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from industrial biochar under Puro.Earth, a major CDR registry. Located in Telangana, India, Varaha’s project produces biochar, a carbon-rich material made from agricultural waste, specifically corn shanks. Biochar sequesters CO2 and enhances soil fertility, with the potential to lock carbon away for thousands of years.

By using gasification technology, Varaha’s process not only removes CO2 but also mitigates emissions from waste mismanagement and fossil fuels. The carbon credits issued under Puro.Earth’s scientific standards validate this innovative approach. Varaha’s success positions it as a pioneer in biochar credit generation in South and Southeast Asia.

The company uses a digital platform for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) to quantify carbon sequestration, making its biochar projects scalable. Varaha has already enrolled over 900,000 acres of farmland across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Kenya, working with numerous partners to increase its impact.

Madhur Jain, Varaha’s CEO, sees this issuance as a major step in India’s carbon removal efforts, positioning the company as a global leader in high-quality CDR projects. With significant equity financing, including a recent $8.7 million Series A round, Varaha is poised to expand its operations and drive India’s carbon removal market forward.
