The WongPhai Biochar Project in Ratchaburi, Thailand, has achieved significant third-party recognition by earning an AA–BBB Estimation Rating from Sylvera, a leading global carbon data platform. This October 2025 grade positions the community-driven initiative in the upper half of Sylvera’s rigorous evaluation scale (D to AAA). The rating signals independent confidence in the project’s capacity to deliver the claimed tonnes of CO₂ removal and its associated co-benefits.

Sylvera’s assessment evaluates carbon projects across four key pillars: the Carbon Score, which measures actual carbon reductions; Additionality, confirming the project’s impact extends beyond a business-as-usual scenario; Permanence, which assesses the long-term sustainability of the carbon benefits; and the delivered Co-Benefits.

The WongPhai project focuses on the cultivation and utilization of local bamboo. Historically, offcuts were simply burned, contributing to pollution. A partnership between Planboo and WongPhai established a process to convert this biomass into biochar, engaging the local community in the global carbon removal effort. The biochar is applied locally to improve sustainability. It is used in pig farm septic ponds to enhance air quality and mitigate methane emissions, while also improving soil quality and increasing crop yields for neighboring farmlands.

Beyond its core environmental impact, the project generates substantial social and economic value. The biochar production process creates job opportunities, especially for women and the elderly. Furthermore, WongPhai supports sustainable regional development through community workshops and advances research by collaborating with universities on biochar’s broader effects, positioning the initiative as a key development in Thailand’s biochar innovation landscape.
