Hempalta Corp. has announced the wind-up of its hemp processing operations as of September 8, 2025. This development follows a strategic review of the company’s business and financial position, which will now lead to an evaluation of alternative financing, sale, or other business combinations. The decision marks a shift in the company’s focus away from its capital-intensive processing and consumer products toward its carbon credit business.

Hempalta’s operations, based in Calgary, Alberta, included the production of hemp-based consumer goods and hemp biochar. The company had previously established the Hemp Carbon Standard, which verified nearly 30,000 tons of carbon removal across a global network of farms, and was actively involved in creating a farmer-driven hemp carbon credit program. Despite these efforts, the company faced challenges in generating consistent revenue and securing the necessary capital to continue its processing activities.

A key factor in this decision was the high capital cost associated with hemp decortication, the process of separating the stalk into bast fibre and hurd. The proximity of processing facilities to hemp farms is also a critical logistical challenge for the industry, as the bulky nature of hemp stalks makes transport over long distances uneconomical. The company’s previously announced equipment sale did not close, further limiting its resources.

This news highlights the ongoing hurdles in scaling up hemp-based businesses, particularly those involving high-cost infrastructure. The experience of Hempalta, which had a verifiable carbon removal standard and a pipeline of projects, serves as a reminder of the significant financial and logistical considerations required to succeed in this sector. The company’s new strategy will focus on its scalable and lower-capital-cost Hemp Carbon Standard. As part of this transition, members of the board and the corporate secretary have resigned, with the CEO continuing to manage the sale of processing equipment and the carbon credits.
