The Tchologo region in northern Côte d’Ivoire recently saw the delivery of essential equipment to nine biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. The project is financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and aims to support the economic empowerment and professional integration of vulnerable individuals. This group includes people affected by socio-political crises, those displaced by conflict, and victims of trafficking, with a particular focus on empowering women and youth.

The official handover ceremony took place in Ferkessédougou on September 25, 2025. Each of the nine beneficiary production units, which are grouped into cooperatives and associations, received a suite of tools. This equipment included pyrolysisPyrolysis is a thermochemical process that converts waste biomass into bio-char, bio-oil, and pyro-gas. It offers significant advantages in waste valorization, turning low-value materials into economically valuable resources. Its versatility allows for tailored products based on operational conditions, presenting itself as a cost-effective and efficient More kilns, protective gear (goggles, gloves, boots, helmets), packaging materials, wheelbarrows, and scales. These supplies are intended to professionalize the production process, moving the groups beyond small, artisanal operations.

The move to equip these units is a strategic step toward turning locally available agricultural waste into a profitable resource. Biochar production offers a pathway for these groups to achieve economic autonomy and professional stability. The Pro-Sip project is managed by the Ministry of Employment and Social Protection and targets municipalities across the Savanes, Zanzan, and Bas-Sassandra districts. The goal is to facilitate socio-professional integration for vulnerable people across the targeted regions, with the biochar units in Tchologo representing a focused effort within this broader framework.
