Envigas and Skellefteå Kraft are initiating a feasibility study for a large-scale facility in Hedensbyn, Skellefteå, focused on producing biocarbon and pyrolysisPyrolysis is a thermochemical process that converts waste biomass into bio-char, bio-oil, and pyro-gas. It offers significant advantages in waste valorization, turning low-value materials into economically valuable resources. Its versatility allows for tailored products based on operational conditions, presenting itself as a cost-effective and efficient More oil. The proposed plant would significantly expand existing production capacities, targeting over 25,000 tons of biocarbon and 20,000 tons of pyrolysis oil annually. If realized, the facility could reduce industrial carbon dioxide emissions by up to 120,000 tons per year by substituting fossil inputs in key sectors.
Envigas currently operates a smaller facility in Bureå, which has been instrumental in product development and industrial qualification, especially within metallurgy. The new project aims to build on this foundation to support Sweden’s broader industrial decarbonization goals.
Skellefteå Kraft brings to the partnership its expertise in renewable energy and regional infrastructure. The companies will explore technical and operational synergies between Skellefteå Kraft’s existing energy systems and a new adjacent biocarbon production facility. The collaboration also considers the region’s strong supply of renewable biomassBiomass is a complex biological organic or non-organic solid product derived from living or recently living organism and available naturally. Various types of wastes such as animal manure, waste paper, sludge and many industrial wastes are also treated as biomass because like natural biomass these More, enabling efficient integration into a circular economy model.
Biocarbon produced through pyrolysis of forest industry residues serves as a renewable substitute for fossil coal in metallurgy, among other uses. Pyrolysis oil, a co-product of the process, offers a renewable alternative to fossil-based fuels and chemicals.
Together, Envigas and Skellefteå Kraft aim to create scalable solutions for fossil-free industrial production, reinforcing Northern Sweden’s position in the green transition and supporting long-term emissions reductions through advanced bio-based technologies.
