Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has entered into a strategic investment partnership with CarbonScape, a materials developer based in New Zealand. Announced in July 2026, this collaboration focuses on advancing the commercial scale-up and industrial deployment of sustainable, bio-based graphite materials for next-generation battery supply chains. The transaction provides CATL with board representation and establishes the manufacturer as a primary industrialization partner tasked with scaling CarbonScape’s proprietary technology to meet the rising international demand for localized, low-carbon anode materials.
The battery industry faces a critical supply bottleneck regarding battery-grade graphite, which represents up to 50 percent of a lithium-ion battery cell by volume. Global demand is projected to increase six-fold between 2025 and 2040, driven by rapid electric vehicle expansion. Currently, more than 75 percent of global battery graphite consists of synthetic feedstockFeedstock refers to the raw organic material used to produce biochar. This can include a wide range of materials, such as wood chips, agricultural residues, and animal manure. More derived from oil-based materials through energy-intensive processes that emit significant carbon dioxide. Furthermore, approximately 95 percent of the global processing capacity for battery-grade graphite is concentrated in China, creating geopolitical vulnerabilities and supply risks for automotive manufacturers in the United States and Europe.
To address these supply chain constraints and environmental challenges, CarbonScape has developed a proprietary thermal process that converts renewable forestry by-products, such as wood chips and sawdust, into high-performance, battery-grade biographite. This material is engineered to match the electrochemical performance of conventional synthetic graphite while maintaining cost parity. By utilizing localized forestry residues, the technology offers a carbon-negative footprint. The partnership combines CarbonScape’s material science innovation with CATL’s extensive industrial experience in mass production, global facility management, and operational process optimization.
The immediate outcome of this strategic alliance is a structured operational pathway toward full commercial-scale production, targeted for execution by the end of 2030. Initial efforts will focus on validating CarbonScape’s production process at a demonstration scale within existing CATL facilities. This validation phase will de-risk the technical processing steps before the companies construct dedicated commercial plants. Ultimately, the partnership establishes a localized, environmentally sustainable supply chain for critical anode materials, enabling international automakers and policymakers to fulfill increasingly stringent regulatory and sustainability requirements across global markets.
