Citizens for Clean Air and the Western Colorado Community Foundation, in collaboration with Lobato Farms, conducted a field trial in Grand Junction, Colorado, to evaluate biochar’s performance in dry agricultural soils. The trial evaluated small-scale test plots featuring various soil amendment ratios, including ten percent and twenty percent biochar-compost blends, pure compost, and an unamended control plot. The research evaluated how soil additives influence water retention and crop performance in regions impacted by persistent drought and shrinking Colorado River irrigation supplies.

Agriculture across Western Colorado faces severe water scarcity and soil depletion driven by climate change, rising temperatures, and reduced river allocations. Small-scale agricultural producers operating in arid climates encounter depleted soil structure that struggles to hold moisture, leading to severe yield drops unless heavily irrigated. In degraded land previously dominated by invasive weed species like kochia, establishing healthy crop root systems without excessive water use presents a major operational challenge.

To mitigate soil moisture loss, researchers applied wood-derived biochar blended with organic compost directly into the topsoil prior to planting. The porous structure of pure carbon biochar increases total soil surface area, enhancing its physical capacity to absorb and hold both water and key nutrients near plant roots. The trial demonstrated that applying a ten percent biochar and compost mixture delivered optimal moisture retention while reducing total irrigation requirements during arid conditions.

The study established that biochar-amended soil significantly improved crop yields compared to unamended and purely composted test plots. Increased water retention enabled native grasses and produce crops to withstand prolonged dry spells, proving the viability of localized biochar applications for drought resilience. Following these positive outcomes, Lobato Farms expanded bulk biochar distribution to neighboring regional farmers to promote widespread soil conservation across the Grand Valley.
