The LEGO Group is investing over £2 million in carbon removal projects focusing on reforestation, biochar, and rock weathering. Partnering with Climate Impact Partners and ClimeFi, LEGO is supporting multiple initiatives, including purchasing carbon credits through the GreenTrees platform to reforest more than 400,000 hectares in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley.

bBiochar carbon removal, which stabilizes and stores carbon by converting waste biomass into biochar, is a key focus. Additionally, LEGO is funding rock weathering, a process that spreads rock powder on agricultural fields to accelerate natural carbon capture. These projects will issue carbon credits until 2026 and help LEGO explore emerging carbon mitigation technologies beyond its direct operations.

This investment follows a previous $2.4 million commitment to direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) technology from Climeworks, forming part of LEGO’s broader sustainability strategy. Annette Stube, LEGO’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting innovative climate solutions while contributing to biodiversity improvement through reforestation.

LEGO has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, backed by $1.4 billion in investments through 2025. This includes constructing carbon-neutral buildings, expanding renewable energy across manufacturing sites, and engaging suppliers to reduce supply chain emissions. Through its Supplier Sustainability Programme, LEGO requires suppliers to track and reduce their carbon footprint, focusing on efficiency, renewable energy, and lower-carbon transportation.
