Located in the Burney area, Hat Creek Bioenergy provides clean energy to the local grid and bolsters sustainable forest management practices. The facility employs 15 skilled plant operators, primarily from the Burney community, and generated over 60 temporary jobs during its construction phase.

The plant processes forest biomass from approximately five square miles of forest annually, which significantly aids in wildfire mitigation. Over its operational lifespan, the facility is expected to positively impact over a hundred square miles of surrounding forest, substantially decreasing the likelihood of catastrophic fires.

The project has garnered support from various investors and partners, including Peter Paul and Mieko Willoughby, who served as primary investors. The California Energy Commission, in partnership with the Fall River Resource Conservation District, provided key grant support. Additional early contributions came from the US Forest Service and the USDA Rural Energy for America Program. Ongoing support is provided by CalFire, including a Biomass Transportation Subsidy.
