Verde Resources Inc. recently announced the successful independent testing of its proprietary BioAsphalt™ cold recycling mix, confirming its potential as a sustainable road material. Evaluated by the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), the mix is composed entirely of 100% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and incorporates biocharBiochar is a carbon-rich material created from biomass decomposition in low-oxygen conditions. It has important applications in environmental remediation, soil improvement, agriculture, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and sustainable materials, promoting efficiency and reducing waste in various contexts while addressing climate change challenges. More for enhanced performance and carbon sequestration.
NCAT’s initial evaluation found that the cold-recycled asphalt mix meets and exceeds key industry specifications for durability, strength, and moisture resistance. Specifically, testing for moisture susceptibility yielded a Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) of 0.74, which surpasses the common industry minimum threshold of 0.70 for cold-recycled materials. The mix also achieved an Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) of 61.8 psi under dry conditions.
This level of performance indicates strong cohesion and retained strength, suggesting that the material may be suitable for high-stress surface-layer applications. This marks a shift for 100% RAP cold recycling, which has been traditionally limited to intermediate or base layers beneath the surface course. Verde’s achievement in creating a mix with surface-layer potential while simultaneously sequestering carbon represents an advancement in infrastructure technology.
Furthering its sustainable credentials, the BioAsphalt™ process is burnerless and solvent-free, allowing for production and application at ambient temperatures. This method significantly reduces energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional hot-mix methods. Verde has now partnered with Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions in a long-term exclusive agreement to accelerate the commercial adoption of this low-carbon, high-performance infrastructure solution.
