In a significant move for corporate climate action, global technology giant SAP has announced a strategic partnership with Climeworks, a leader in carbon dioxide removal. This alliance is not merely a financial transaction but a co-innovation effort designed to embed robust carbon management capabilities directly into enterprise technology platforms, marking a new frontier in the fight against climate change.

As part of the multi-million-euro agreement, SAP is securing 37,000 tonnes of high-quality carbon removal credits from Climeworks through 2034. This portfolio is strategically diverse, incorporating a mix of technologies including direct air capture (DAC), biochar, and enhanced rock weathering. This investment is crucial for SAP as it works to neutralise its own residual emissions, those that cannot be eliminated through conventional means, in line with its ambitious net-zero by 2030 target. By diversifying its carbon removal methods, SAP is not only mitigating its environmental footprint but also hedging against future price volatility and risks in the carbon market.

The collaboration goes beyond a simple carbon credit purchase. The two companies are co-developing innovative, ERP-centric carbon management tools, which will be integrated into SAP solutions like the SAP Sustainability Control Tower and made available via the SAP Store. These solutions are designed to provide businesses with seamless, data-driven tools to measure, manage, and mitigate their carbon footprints at scale. This initiative is a prime example of how technology and innovation can be leveraged to drive systemic change across industries. Climeworks itself has adopted SAP solutions, including SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud, to support its own rapid growth, demonstrating the deep-seated nature of this partnership.

For the biochar sector, this collaboration represents a powerful endorsement from a major global corporation. The inclusion of biochar alongside engineered solutions like DAC underscores its growing recognition as a credible and scalable carbon removal method. This strategic partnership highlights how biochar, as a durable carbon removal solution, is becoming a key component of corporate climate strategies, validating its role in a diverse portfolio of climate technologies and signalling its increasing importance in the global sustainability landscape.
